Celebrating America’s birthday on the 4th of July usually involves fireworks. Legalities aside, there is factor to consider. Fireworks can trigger Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in those who fought for our country.

Fireworks can sound like gunfire and other explosive blasts and can trigger PTSD. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates 11% to 20% of military members who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from the condition in a given year according to CNN. These veterans would just like a little consideration this 4th of July.

Tell a known veteran in your neighborhood of your plans to give them the opportunity to deal with it by leaving or maybe putting on some headphones, or however they choose. Also, confine the use of the noisemakers to the 4th and not the days leading up to or after the 4th.

It’s common courtesy in recognition of their uncommon valor and courage.
