Today is National Puppy Day! To celebrate, some may decide to bring a puppy into their homes. And it makes sense, since dogs are known as Man's Best Friend. They're loyal, affectionate, and absolutely adorable. Not all breeds, however, are suited to Wyoming's harsh winters, and some make better indoor companions than outdoor adventurers. Here are 5 dog breeds perfect for Wyoming dog owners, in no particular order.

    Golden Retriever

Consistently ranked in one of the top spots in annual "America's Most Popular Dogs" lists, the Golden Retriever makes the perfect companion for Wyomingites. Anatolian Shepherd

Bred in Turkey, the Anatolian Shepherd was designed for long mountain treks, making it a good hiking partner for outdoorsy individuals. The breed also has herding skills that come in handy for livestock owners. Anatolian Shepherds can be stubborn, and be sure to socialize them as puppies to avoid having them become grumpy old curmudgeons.

    Tibetan Terrier

For those that enjoy smaller breeds, look no further than the Tibetan Terrier. Though they often weigh 30 lbs or less, their undercoat helps them withstand the coldest temperatures. Originally bred in monasteries, the terriers were given as gifts by monks. These dogs are best in homes without young children, though.

    Newfoundland

Known for its use in water rescues, the Newfoundland has thick coats built to withstand its native Canadian winters. With an average weight of 120 lbs, they may seem intimidating, but are among the gentlest of dog breeds, and have been nicknamed "gentle giants." They are also great with children, and extremely loyal to their owners, and enjoy hanging out at the house as much as they enjoy going on adventures, making them a perfect fit for Wyoming families.
