5 Ridiculously Expensive Foods
We suddenly became hungry — and wanted a bigger paycheck — after reading about wacky, overpriced foods like the $1,000 jam and the world’s most expensive chocolate pudding. But this is far from the first time someone’s had the bright idea to charge thousands of dollars for high-end victuals.
In fact, it’s a weird sort of tradition in the food world, and after looking at a few of the more notable examples, we decided this would be the perfect time for a list. Grab your utensils, guard your wallet and take a look at some of the most opulent foodstuffs in the world.
The World’s Most Expensive Beer
Looking for a beer with “a complex taste of citric, caramel and toffee flavours with an undertone of licorice and aniseed”? Prepare to shell out $39 for a pint of Vielle Bon Secours — or $1126 for a 12-liter bottle — and while you’re at it, buy a plane ticket to England, because you can only get this special ale at one particular bar in London.
Burger King’s $200 Burger
Remember when Burger King tried to go upscale in the early ’90s with BK Dinner Baskets, table service and, uh, free popcorn? This flame-broiled beauty — called simply “The Burger” — takes that silly concept to the extreme by adding “Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, lambs lettuce, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise in an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun” to the Burger King experience. In their defense, it was created for charity, like the $1,000 jam. Still, we’d feel pretty dumb ordering fries with that.
To charge $125 a slice for something you can get for next-to-nothing at any neighborhood Domino’s, you’ve either got to have massive cojones or access to some of the world’s finest ingredients. We’ll credit Nino Selimaj, owner of Nino’s Pizzeria in New York, with both — his Luxury Pizza sounds ridiculous (and it’s ridiculously expensive to boot), but if you’re in the mood for caviar, lobster, creme fraiche and chives on your pie, this is the place to find it.
And How About a $1,000 Bagel While You’re At It?
We generally don’t think of bagels as luxury items — but then again, most of us don’t slather white truffle cream cheese and goji berry infused Riesling jelly with golden leaves on them. For that, you’ll have to go to the Westin New York Hotel at Times Square, where chef Frank Tujague dreamed up this super bagel as a way of raising funds for culinary arts scholarships. And for Dessert, a $1,000 Sundae
New York’s Serendipity 3 restaurant is synonymous with luxury food and celebrity clientele, but they’ve saved the best for after your meal: the Grand Opulence Sundae, featuring premium ice cream made with Tahitian vanilla beans and Madagascar vanilla, the world’s most expensive chocolate, 23-karat edible gold leaf, and more — along with a bowl of caviar on top. Your Häagen-Dazs doesn’t seem so fancy anymore, does it?
