It seems that more and more these days, people want to re-define what we know as marriage. However, this is nothing new. See how this has been going on for decades.  Most people define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. However, through the decades and centuries we find that other countries have had their own methods and ways to define it.

Here are 5 "unorthodox" ways that people have tied the knot through the years.

  1. Polyandry - This is the antithesis of Polygamy. Polyandry is where one woman is married to multiple men.
  2. Sororate & Levirate Marriages - This is more of a family alliance, rather than a marriage. In a Levirate marriage, a man will marry the widow of his deceased brother and if they have children, they are accredited to the dead brother. A Sororate marriage, practiced amongst tribes in India and North America, a kin folk will offer a sister to a widower.
  3. Nikah Mut'ah - Typically very popular is the world of Islam, is nothing more than a temporary marriage. Considered either a fixed-term marriage or simply a pleasure marriage.
  4. A Ghost Marriage - In some parts of the world, it is ok to marry someone who has already died. It's also possible to marry to dead people. Tomb robbers have been known to dig up women to marry them, but not without a cost. It could cost up to $3,300 U.S. dollars.
  5. Devadasi - The word literally means "maid servant of god." The south Indians practice this in which a young girl marries a god or diety. After awhile, the practice became corrupted. As the devadasi's were used as temple prostitutes for rich people and priests in order for the temples to make money.
