When Billy Joel announced his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden last year, he promised unique and special setlists. But nobody could have predicted what happened at his show Friday (March 21), when he invited Brian Johnson of AC/DC onstage to sing ‘You Shook Me All Night Long.’

Johnson came on two-thirds of the way through Joel’s main set, immediately after Joel’s ballad ’She’s Always a Woman.’ That may have seemed like an incongruous segue, but the crowd nonetheless leapt to its feet and sang along. And considering AC/DC haven’t worked since the ‘Black Ice’ tour ended in 2010, Johnson’s voice was in great shape.

The rest of the setlist follows the template of other recent Billy Joel shows, where he’s mixing in deep cuts — including ‘Surprises,’ ‘I’ve Loved These Days’ and ‘Where’s the Orchestra’ — among his greatest hits. In addition to ‘You Shook Me All Night Long,” Joel also covered the Beatles’ ’A Hard Day’s Night’ and The Lion Sleeps Tonight,’ inspired, presumedly, by his performance of it the day before on ’The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon and an iPad.

Last month, Johnson disclosed to a Florida radio station that AC/DC were going to enter the studio in May for a new album. They are also planning a 40-date tour in honor of their 40th anniversary.
