CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) —The Wyoming Game and Fish Department urges people to be careful with wild and domestic fowl now that Wyoming is among the states where a strain of bird flu has turned up in recent months.

Officials announced Thursday that a goose from the Cheyenne area has tested positive for the H5N2 virus. The virus isn't thought to present much risk to people.

Still, officials urge people who handle wild or domestic fowl to take precautions. They recommend wearing gloves, thorough hand-washing afterward, disinfecting areas where bird meat is processed and cooking that meat thoroughly.

The virus is a bigger threat to wild and domestic fowl populations. Two bird flu viruses have been documented in wild and domestic fowl in 11 states since late last year.
