BOPU: Discolored Water Possible Monday

The City of Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities (BOPU) will reactivate a portion of the 42-inch water transmission main on Monday, February 10. BOPU spokesman Clint Bassett says reactivating the main may change how water flows through the community and may temporarily result in discolored water.

Bassett says changes in how water flows through mains can stir up sediment or loosen corrosion that causes discolored water. Customers who experience discolored water should run cold water from a faucet for 15 to 20 minutes. If the water doesn’t clear, call the water department’s Operations and Maintenance Division at 307-637-6471.

Residents are urged to avoid using hot water or doing laundry while the water is discolored. This will prevent sediment and corrosion from being drawn into water heaters or onto clothes. When water flows clear again, normal water use may resume. While the discolored water is not Cheyenne’s usual standard of water quality, it will continue to be safe. Crews deactivated the main in order to install a new water valve.
