Budget Passes Both Chambers

Both the House and Senate have adopted the Joint Conference Committee report on the state’s $3.3 billion dollar General Fund buget bill. It now goes to Governor Matt Mead. The Governor has several options, he can sign it, veto all or part of it or let it go without his signature.

Special Session

Now that the Wyoming Supreme Court has denied the state’s petition for a rehearing in the Cindy Hill case, Senator Hank Coe (SD-18), chairman of the Senate Education Committee, said the only option they have to fix the law is to hold a special session. The court overturned a law enacted last year that removed most of the duties of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill. The state asked for a rehearing in the case but the Wyoming Supreme Court voted 3-2 not to re-hear the case and told the legislature to stop delaying and fix the unconstitutional law. However the House on Monday did not consider a Senate bill that would have set the parameters for a special session.

School Bus Safety

The Senate has given final legislative approval to a bill that would help school districts equip their school buses with cameras. During floor debate, Senator Bill Landen (SD-27) said the cameras will help catch motorists who illegally pass buses stopped to pick up and drop off students. But Senate Majority Floor Leader, Senator Phil Nicholas (SD-10) said he thinks House Bill 5 misses the mark.
