Cheyenne Fire & Rescue firefighters were called out to fight fires the fewest times since 1996 last year.

Official end of the year numbers show the department was called out 118 times on fires in 2014. That compares with 144 such calls in 2013 and and 164 in 2012. Overall fire calls in the city have shown a downward trend since 2000, when the department was called out on fires 195 times.

But even though local firefighters didn't have as many fires to deal with last year, they remained busy with other duties. They conducted 971 first time fire inspections last year, and increase of more than 400 from the 571 such inspections in 2013.
