A spokesman for the Cheyenne Fire & Rescue Department is encouraging people to change their smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries this weekend.

The official end of Daylight Savings Time is 2 a.m. Sunday, and Byron Matthews says it's always a good idea to change your batteries when the time changes. He says changing the batteries is as easy as taking your alarm off the wall, finding the battery storage area, and replacing the existing batteries.

Making it a practice to change the batteries when the time changes should ensure the devices always have working batteries. Matthews also says you should replace your alarms every 8 to 10 years.

Matthews says if you don't have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home, now is a good time to get some.

Matthews adds the department has a program to help low income families get alarms and get them installed.
