An official with Cheyenne Fire & Rescue is reminding city residents while most fireworks are illegal inside city limits, there are a few exceptions.

Byron Mathews says sparklers, smoke devices and novelty devices such as snaps and caps that contain small amounts of gunpowder are legal.

All other fireworks are illegal.

Mathews says despite recent rain in the area, conditions are "absolutely dangerous for fireworks" because of high winds, lots of plant growth and a general trend towards drying conditions.

Cheyenne Police Department spokesman Officer Dan Long says police are looking out for fireworks users and will continue to do so through Independence Day.

Long admits the law is unpopular with many people and often violated, but he says anyone caught using fireworks inside city limits will be fined $225 and have their fireworks confiscated, adding police will be out in force.

Once again this year, there will be a free live fireworks show featuring music by the Country Club Band and Micheal Martin Murphy at Frontier Park on July 4th. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with music starting at 6 p.m. The fireworks show itself will start at 9:35 p.m.

The annual Fourth of July celebration is presented by the City of Cheyenne and Cheyenne Frontier Days.
