Cheyenne Regional Medical Center CEO Margo Karsten says people who say the hospital isn't doing a good job of utilizing available space for patient care are wrong.

She says there is no extra space available at the hospital's East Campus, which is dedicated to behavioral health and rehabilitation. In regard to the hospital's Main Campus, Karsten says people may assume that space is being wasted on the 9th floor because those visiting the hospital solarium or conference room may notice adjoining areas that don't have hospital beds in them.

But Karsten says the fact is those areas ''aren't fit for patient care".

She says it's important to understand that some of the open spaces can't hold oxygen equipment without violating safety codes. She says there have been days recently when every single hospital bed at CRMC was being used, adding the simple fact is that ''we've run out of room".
