The first phase in road surface reconstruction work on parts of Interstate 80 and Lincolnway in the Cheyenne area gets underway today, according to a release from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).

People should expect lane closures and/or detours in areas where the work is being done.

Kevin Erickson, a WYDOT resident engineer based in Cheyenne, says the work involves replacing concrete sections of the mainline roadway. That includes about 10 inches of concrete surfacing followed by 14 inches of crushed base.

The surfacing sits on the crushed gravel base. The slabs of concrete surfacing have to be allowed to cure for four days before being reopened to traffic. Later in the project crews return to seal the slabs.

Erickson says the long-term impact is that the road is smoother to drive on and lasts longer.

The following sections of roadway will be included in the project:

  • I-80 between reference markers 361 and 380,
  • I-80 around reference marker 372,
  • Lincolnway at Pioneer Avenue,
  • Lincolnway at Ames Avenue,
  • Lincolnway at College Drive,
  • Lincolnway at Pershing Boulevard
  • Lincolnway at Nationway

Other sections of Lincolnway will also see repair work.

Travel lanes will be reduced while work takes place and a detour will be in effect for westbound travelers during the Lincolnway/Pioneer Avenue portion of the project, according to the release.
