Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen is asking for the public's help in catching whoever stole a significant amount of copper wire from the construction site at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Tuesday night.

The mayor is also warning contractors and anyone else using copper wire to keep an eye an it because it has become a highly valued target for thieves. Kaysen says whoever stole the wire on Tuesday either went over or through a fence and stripped all of the wire they could get ahold of.

The mayor says the exact amount or dollar value of the wire taken is still under investigation, but he calls it a significant amount.

He is asking anyone with information on the case to contact the Cheyenne Police Department.

Kaysen says the wire was stolen from the conservatory area of the gardens.

Laramie county voters in 2013 approved spending $16 million for a renovation and expansion project at the gardens.

The Botanic Gardens/LIons Park area has been the site of several incidents of vandalism and other property crimes in recent years, including a 2013 incident in which a number of plants were damaged or destroyed.
