Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says the current Cheyenne Police Department headquarters at 2020 Capitol Ave. will probably be put out on the market later this year unless another governmental agency wants it.

The CPD is scheduled to move into the new Public Safety Building in downtown Cheyenne on May 11. Laramie County voters in 2012 authorized spending $25 million in sixth penny sale tax money to pay for a new home for the department.

Supporters of the proposal at that time said the current building was old, too small and not suited for modern technology. Among other issues drinking water in the building had been declared as unsafe, and basic structural and electrical issues were also reported.

Mayor Kaysen on Wednesday said once the department moves to their new home the city will likely declare the current police building as surplus property. He says the next step would be to find out if another governmental agency would be interested in the property, and, if not, to put the building up for sale.

The mayor did note that the building's location in the heart of downtown Cheyenne might be desirable for some purposes, although he didn't say if he had any specific possibilities in mind.
