Police Chief Brian Kozak says that while you probably won't get shot or stabbed in Cheyenne, someone might steal your property.

The chief says Cheyenne is a pretty safe place overall, with a violent crime rate that is only about 35 percent of the national average.

But property crimes such as shoplifting, theft and car burglaries are a different matter and happen at a rate that is at or above that of many big cities across the country. Kozak says one reason for that is that the same stores that attract shoppers from around the region also attract attract robbers, shoplifters and burglars.

Auto burglaries have also been a constant problem in the city for years, with items such as cash, computers and especially guns often stolen from vehicles, which police say are often left unlocked  and unattended for long periods, including overnight.
