Cheyenne police are investigating a rash of car break-ins which have occurred around the city over the last month.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says 43 cars have had items, including purses and firearms, stolen out of them.

"It's not that there's a huge uptick in this necessarily, although we do see this more as the weather gets nicer, but what we're seeing is people leaving their cars unlocked and other people are taking advantage of that," said Malatesta.

"I think people in Wyoming kind of have this perception that 'just leave the stuff in the vehicle, leave the doors unlocked, nothing's going to happen' and that's just really not true," he added. "We need to get out of that mindset."

Malatesta is asking anyone with information about the car break-ins to call Crime Stoppers Silent Witness at (307) 638-TIPS. Callers will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
