Cheyenne Police Department spokesman Officer Dan Long is warning residents about an increase in burglaries.

Long says many of the burglaries are happening during the daytime, and often times the home burglaries start with a theft from a car.

He says a common pattern lately has been for the burglar to steal a garage opener from a vehicle, and then use the stolen item to enter the garage and/or home. In some cases the burglars are either able to enter the home through a door from the garage, or they find house keys in the garage.

Long says people can discourage the burglaries, first and foremost, by locking their vehicles and not leaving valuables or items that can be used to enter the home in them. He also says people need to keep an eye on their neighborhoods, including during the day if they are home, and report suspicious behavior to police.

Finally, Long says Neighborhood Watch Programs are effective, but only if they are active and properly implemented.
