A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says that agency has been receiving a lot of reports of credit and debit card fraud recently.

Officer Dan Long says the most common problem seems to be "skimming" of personal information. Long says that involves using electronic devices to obtain account information as the cards are being scanned. He says it's extremely difficult to know if your information is being skimmed, so the best defense is to frequently check your account.

Long says any unauthorized charges should be reported to your bank or credit card company immediately. He says if a valid explanation cannot be found for the charges you should also report the theft to law enforcement.
