A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says that agency is always looking for qualified applicants.

Officer Dan Long says it typically takes about a year to become an officer, with applicants having to pass physical and written tests as well as an extensive background check. Applicants must also pass an oral board examination, take a three month course at the state Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas and be at least 21 years old.

Starting officers are currently paired with veteran police officers until they are deemed ready to work solo.

Long says while he isn't sure whether current staffing is below ideal numbers "we're always looking for good people to join our team". More information is available at the Cheyenne Police Department website.
