A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department wants local residents to know they can drop off unused prescription drugs in a drop box in the Police Department Building lobby.

Officer Dan Long says his agency is seeing more abuse of prescription drugs these days than traditional street drugs like meth and heroin. And Long says nationally more people are dying from prescription drug overdoses than from street drugs. Long says the idea behind the drop off drugs is to get the prescription drugs away from people who might abuse them, especially young people who might either steal them or buy them illegally.

Long says over 43.5 pounds of prescription drugs were left in the box last year. He says people can leave drugs in the drop off box Monday through Friday from 8am until 5pm, no questions asked.
