The Cheyenne Police Department is planning an all-out effort to fight underage drinking and illegal drug use during prom weekend on Friday and Saturday nights (April 29-30).

Spokesman Officer Kevin Malatesta says police as well as employees of Laramie County School District#1 will be closely watching the dances themselves for any signs of illegal activity. He says police officers will also be working extra hard to find any drinking or drug use at after-prom parties.

Police will even be using their CPD mobile command post to catch drunk drivers.

Malatesta is also reminding parents that anyone who allows an illegal underage drinking party on their property can be arrested or at least cited with a ticket ordering them to appear in court. People who furnish alcohol to minors face a $360 fine.

Malatesta is also reminding people that there is a curfew in effect that makes it illegal for juveniles to be out between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. The Cheyenne East prom is now scheduled for Friday night, April 29 after being re-scheduled earlier.

Both Central and South High Schools will have their proms on Saturday, April 30.
