A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says a proposal to lower the city speed limit in areas which don't have a posted limit from 30 mph to 25 mph was prompted by widespread complaints about excessive speed in some residential areas.

Currently the limit on city streets is 30 mph unless signage specifically says otherwise.

Officer Dan Long says police have been getting calls for years about 30 mph being too fast, especially in areas with a lot of children. The Cheyenne City Council Public Service Committee this week heard about the proposed change, which now goes on to the full city council for a final decision.

Police say if the change were implemented, they would probably start enforcing the new law with warnings to motorists who were traveling between 25-30 in the affected areas until the change becomes widely known.
