A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says people who may have information on criminal activity need to contact police instead of posting it on Facebook.

Sgt. David Janes says rumors posted on Facebook and other social media tend to panic the community and don't help solve or prevent crimes. He says besides notifying police, another option specifically for students would be to report concerns to a school administrator.

Unsubstantiated rumors over the past few weeks involving supposed threats at South High School a few days ago and McCormick Junior High School last month turned out to be unfounded, but frightened parents and students and forced police to allocate time and resources that could have been used elsewhere.

Sgt. Janes says vandalism reported at South High early Wednesday isn't believed to be related to the alleged threats of violence. That incident, which remains under investigation, featured someone who posted graffiti on school property.
