The Cheyenne Police Department is scheduled to move into the new Public Safety Building on May 11, according to police spokesman Kevin Malatesta.

Laramie County voters in 2012 approved spending $25 million in sixth-penny sales tax money to build the new facility, which is located on the site of the old Dinneen's Car Dealership in downtown Cheyenne.

Supporters of the new building said the current Police Department offices on Capitol Avenue were cramped, unsuited for modern technology and in some cases even dangerous.

Work on the new facility began in August of 2014.

Besides the Cheyenne Police Department, the Public Safety Building will house the Cheyenne Fire&Rescue administration as well as other emergency responders.
