A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says parents need to pay attention to what their kids are doing online and via social media.

Officer Dan Long says that includes learning about the latest smartphone applications and how to trace their kids' activities. It's important to understand that "sexting"--or the texting of sexually provocative photos--can be child pornography if the images are of anyone under 18.

There have been several cases of sexting involving students in the Cheyenne area recently, according to police. The department urges parents to discuss such issues with their children so they are aware of the legal implications.

Long also says parents who see lewd photos on their kids cellphones should contact police.
