Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak is warning local residents not to assume their garages can't be burglarized.

He says one common tactic burglars have been using recently to get into garages is to use a coat hanger or other wire to hook a handle that is attached to a string on many garages. If the thief is able to hook the handle they can manually open the garage, and if the garage has a door to the house which is unlocked, they can get into the home as well.

Kozak says it's a good idea to cut off the handle, and to lock any doors leading from the garage to the house, especially when you aren't home.
