A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department is reminding gun owners to keep their firearms locked up when they are not being used.

Officer Dan Long says that in 2013 the department took reports on 47 stolen guns. He says that of that total, 23 were stolen from cars, and most of those weapons were not locked away. Long says firearms are always among the most prized targets of thieves.

He says keeping firearms under lock and key is even more important in homes with children, due to the dangers posed by kids handling guns without adult supervision.
