Cheyenne Police say most serious crimes aside from property crimes were down in the city last year. Officer Dan Long says there were no reported homicides in Cheyenne in 2012, and says there was a 20% decrease in rape and robbery. Long says vehicle crashes in the city dropped by 21 percent.

He says one area that did see an increase in the city last year was property crimes, which pushed the overall crime rate for part 1 category crimes--which includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, larceny and vehicle theft--to 404 crimes per 10,000 residents, compared to 370 crimes per 10,000 in 2011. The part 1 crime rate for 2010 was also at 404 per 10,000 people, and was considerably higher than that in the years from 1999 through 2009. But Long says a large portion of the property crime increase in 2012 was due to a group of thieves known as the ''garage door bandits", who police say were arrested before the end of the year.
