It will likely be March of next year before the new Cheyenne Public Safety Center opens its doors.

The Cheyenne City Council Finance Committee on Monday approved a contract modification giving FCI Constructors of Wyoming, LLC, 101 more days to build and complete the project.

"We had to change the way we were upgrading the sub-surface conditions to support the additional floors that we were adding to the building," said Lt. Mark Munari, Project Manager for the Cheyenne Public Safety Center. "It turned out that the original plan of compacting ground underneath the center vertical column supports was not cost effective at all."

Lt. Munari says a more cost effective method was to actually replace all of the column pads.

"What that required is us to shore the building, to hold the building up, while we demolished, excavated and removed the existing column pads and then poured new ones," said Lt. Munari. "What that caused is about a three month time delay in the project. Time versus dollars, it was much more cost effective."

Lt. Munari says it's better to get the project done right, instead of getting it done fast.

"There is no addition to the cost of our agreement with them or addition to their contract," said Lt. Munari. "We have funds in contingency and we intend that funds come out of our contingency money to further pay for the general contractor costs for those additional three months."

Lt. Munari says despite the set-back, "We are still under budget."
