A group that raises money that is donated directed to Cheyenne-area classrooms is holding its main fundraising event of the year on Sept. 16 at Cheyenne Central High School.

The Cheyenne Schools Foundation donates money directly to classroom teachers for programs or classes in the district.

Foundation President Jim Yates says teachers submit grant applications to the Foundation and the money is allocated by a special committee, based on how much money is available and what projects were deemed most worthy of funding.

Foundation Board Vice-President Reese Ruiz says the money is needed now more than ever before because of state budget cuts in education funding. She says the funds may go to pay for things like school gardens or materials directly from France for students studying French, to name a couple of examples.

Parents of LCSD#1 students are being encouraged to apply directly through their children's school. You can also register on the foundation's website or facebook page.

Registrations cost $5 for children under 13, $10 for those between 13 and 18 and $25 for adults who pre-register. Adult registration the day of the event will cost $30.
