City of Cheyenne Sanitation crews will stop picking up garbage from containers in some alleys starting May 4th.

Mayor Rick Kaysen says the practice of alley trash pick-up is inefficient because in many cases crews are taking away garbage from containers in the street and then going behind the same streets to pick up trash in adjoining alleys. He says another problem is that some of the older alleys in the city are too small for modern garbage trucks, causing damage to trucks and private property.

Senior citizens and others who may face a health issue in putting their containers on the street can apply for a medical exemption with a note from their doctor. Kaysen says the change in policy will not be citywide, and crews will continue to remove trash from some alleys.

Residents should receive a notice in the mail on whether the change in policy will apply to their area.
