City Agrees To Stop Political Sign Code Enforcement

The City of Cheyenne has agreed to stop enforcing its current ordinance on political signs–at least for now.

The Wyoming Liberty Group recently filed a lawsuit against the current restrictions as being unconstitutional under the first amendment. On Tuesday U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl approved an agreement between the Liberty Group and the city to stop enforcement of the current code. The agreement doesn’t stop either side from arguing its case in the future.

The Council’s Public Service Committee signed off on a proposed new ordinance on political signs that would remove most of the current restrictions. That proposal goes before the full city council next Monday night.

Mayor Rick Kaysen says the city is working to find a long-term solution that will address the constitutional concerns highlighted in the Liberty Group lawsuit.
