Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen on Thursday announced a 60 day hiring freeze for the city.

The mayor says that from now on any city job that opens up will not be filled for at least 60 days while city officials take a look at whether the job needs to be filled or can be left vacant for now.

The freeze took effect on Nov. 1.

The freeze doesn't apply to the Cheyenne Police Department,Cheyenne Fire and Rescue or the Transit or Sanitation departments. The city is currently facing a $100,000 shortfall in city revenues compared to projections as the entire state continues to battle an economic downturn mostly caused by low energy prices.

The mayor says there is no set time for the freeze to end. Kaysen's term ends in January, when Mayor-elect Maran Orr will assume office.
