The 2016 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships are underway for the Wyoming Cowgirls in College Station, TX. The meet runs today through Saturday.

UW head coach Tom Johnson believed good results were ahead from his squad as the meet approached.

“I felt like we progressed through the entire back-half of the season. Every weekend we were better. The women look sharp. They look like they have a lot of energy, and they look like they’re ready to go.”

The Cowgirls are one of ten teams competing. After posting an 8-3 dual record this season, Wyoming was picked to finish fourth in a poll among the conference head coaches prior to the championships. Boise State and Nevada were chosen as co-favorites. Defending champion San Diego State was selected to finish third just in front of the Cowgirls.

Johnson sees the team race as “super tight.”

“They are going to have to come and battle for seven sessions. If we do, and as good as our relays are ranked now, I think we have every bit a chance as any one of those three teams that are ahead of us.”

Entering the MW Championships there are five Wyoming women’s swimmers and one diver ranked among the top five in the conference with their time or score. Maria Harutjunjan is the defending champ in the 100 breaststroke and was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke. Others with top five times include Emily Ridout, Nicole Hlavacek and Molly Coonce. Diver Kari Campbell goes in with the second-best score on the platform event.

The Cowgirls were fourth last year and have finished in the top four in nine straight championship meets.

Prelims got underway at 11:30 a.m., MT, with finals set at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The rest of competition will have prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. for the next three days.

This year’s MW Championships are being held at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
