The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis season came to a close Friday night with a loss in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championships.

After an opening round victory over Colorado State, 4-0, Thursday, the Cowgirls fell to 72nd-ranked UNLV by a final of 4-3 Friday.

Wyoming rolled over the rival Rams. After they won the double points, UW received victories from senior Nastya Tokareva, sophomore Magdalena Stencel and junior Dorottya Jonas at number three, number one and number two singles that closed out the match.

In the quarterfinals, the match came down to the number six singles position, but the Rebels straight set win gave them the point needed to advance.

The Cowgirls came through with 6-4 wins at number two and three doubles for the early lead.

Wyoming lost number two and three singles and trailed 2-1, but Stencel came through with a hard-fought three-set victory, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at the number one position.

UNLV regained a 3-2 edge with a three-set win at number four singles. UW rallied and tied it when Sanne Hoekstra won her match at the number five spot, 6-2, 7-5.

The Rebels though prevailed at number six singles, as Iren Kotseva beat the Cowgirls’ Tessa van Der Ploeg. The score of the match was 7-5, 6-3.

UNLV did go on to win the MW title over top-seed Fresno State in the championship match Sunday in Fort Collins, CO.

Wyoming concluded their season with an 11-12 dual record.
