CWD Identified In Elk Hunt Area 10

A spokesman for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department says Chronic Wasting Disease, a fatal neurological disease of deer, elk and moose has turned up for the first time in an elk in elk in elk hunt area 10.

Al Langston says that area includes part of the Snowy Range in the Medicine Bow National Forest as well as some adjoining private lands. Langston says the discovery is not surprising in view of the fact that deer in the same general area had been found with the disease as long ago as 2002.

Langston says in general the disease is slowly increasing it's range, adding that the increase is certainly not dramatic and is mostly occurring in areas adjoining other areas already known to be home to animals with the disease. Although there is no known health hazard to humans from eating meat from animals with CWD, the Centers for Disease Control generally advise against eating such meat  as a precautionary measure.
