CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming congressional delegation has introduced legislation to preserve the name of the features at Devils Tower National Monument.

U.S. Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso and Rep. Cynthia Lummis introduced the proposal on Wednesday.

The Republicans say it's important for Congress to preserve the Devils Tower name in statute for the community and region because it is America's first national monument and an important landmark.

Some American Indians consider the monument a sacred site and want the name changed to Bear Lodge, which is their name for the site.

Opponents say changing the name would create confusion and possibly reduce the number of tourists visiting the site.
