Crews are set to begin demolishing the former Safeway building in the 2500 block of Pioneer Avenue in Cheyenne next month.

Suzanne Norton, Project Director for the Capitol Square Project, says the demolition will make way for a 153-space parking lot to be built on site. She said the additional spaes are needed to accommodate the State Capitol and Herschler Building renovations that are set to begin next year.

There won't be access to the Herschler parking garage during construction, Norton said. So rather than pushing parking out into the neighborhoods around the state complex, we want to be able to accomodate parking counts that are needed on state property.

Norton said the demolition of the Safeway building should take about a month. She said the construction of the parking lot will then be done in phases and should be done by next spring.
