Donald “Duck” Dunn, bassist for Booker T. and the MGs and session player for Stax Records, has died at the age of 70. The news broke on Facebook via an update from Booker T. and the MGs guitarist Steve Cropper: “Today I lost my best friend, the world has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live. Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.”

Dunn — born in Memphis, Tenn. on Nov. 24, 1941 — also performed on recordings for Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and many others. He was in the original lineup of the Blues Brothers, and he played himself in the 1980 film. Dunn is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 2007 for his work with Booker T. and the MGs.

Farewell, Duck Dunn. I went to the McLemore site in Memphis, years ago, when it was still a charred, empty lot. Stax is huge for me.
