Ernest Borgnine Dead At 95

Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine has died, ABC News Radio has confirmed.He was 95.  Borgnine’s career spanned six decades, and included TV, movies and even cartoons: he provided the voice of Mermaid Man in the animated series Spongebob Squarepants.

A decorated World War II veteran, Borgine took up acting, making his Broadway debut in 1949.  His first big movie role was in From Here to Eternity, and he started a long career as a character actor. His role as a kind-hearted butcher in the 1955 film Marty won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Besides appearing in films like The Poseidon Adventure, The Wild Bunch and The Dirty Dozen, Borgnine also starred in the popular sitcom McHale’s Navy, earning an Emmy nod for his role.  His other TV series included Airwolf and The Single Guy; in addition, he made guest appearances on countless other series, and earned an Emmy nod at the age of 92 for his role in the final episode of ER.  His most recent movie appearance was in Red, in 2010.

Borgnine was married five times, including a brief marriage to Ethel Merman which only lasted a month.
