Is the medical equipment that your doctor and hospitals are using clean enough? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is sending out a warning concerning medical equipment.  According to the FDA, the design of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) Duodenoscope's may impede proper cleaning. The purpose of the FDA's safety warning is to manifest and raise awareness in healthcare workers and patrons who may experience certain procedures with the ERCP endoscopes.

The FDA is stating that, based on the design of one of the least invasive ways to drain pancreatic and billiary ducts stopped by cancerous tumors, these are very difficult to thoroughly clean.

The scopes are flexible and have lighted tubes which makes it very easy to inject contrast dyes and insert other instruments for tissue samples. That being said, they are very difficult to clean. There are microscopic areas of the devise that may be close to impossible to clean efficiently.

The FDA is monitoring the cleaning procedures very carefully to try and avoid any transferring of infectious diseases to to impossible cleaning methods.
