The Cheyenne City Council Finance Committee on Monday voted in favor of increasing water rates charged by the Board of Public Utilities by 3.5 percent, effective January 1, 2015.

BOPU Director Tim Wilson said the increase would be in line with the Consumer Price Index increase for southeast Wyoming over the past year. Wilson told the committee the increase would raise a typical residential water users bill by about $1.28 per month, and the average commercial water user water bill by around $3.28 per month.

The proposed rate increases now move on to the full city council for further consideration. The vote in Finance Committee was 2-0 in favor, with Georgia Broyles and Mike Luna voting yes.

Councilman Jimmy Valdez, the third voting member of the committee, was absent.
