Flu season is in full swing and Wyoming health officials expect this season to pack a punch.

Wyoming Department of Health spokeswoman Kim Deti says the H3N2 strain currently making its rounds is an indicator that a hard-hitting season is underway.

"Seasons where that particular strain has been dominant have tended to be among our most severe when we see the highest burden of hospitalization and, unfortunately, death," said Deti.

"It's no surprise that we see very young children and older individuals to be most vulnerable," she added.

Deti says common-sense measures such as frequently washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home when your sick can help prevent the flu from spreading.

She also encourages people to get that flu shot.

"It's not too late," said Deti. "We don't know how long the season will last, but it's likely not over yet."

"We also want to remind people that the flu vaccine takes about two weeks to do its job," Deti added. "If you get it when people around you are already ill and you're exposed to the illness you may still get sick."
