Cheyenne and F. E. Warren Air Force Base grew up together in the Wyoming Territory starting with Fort D. A. Russell to protect the nation’s first transcontinental railroad in 1867, the same year Cheyenne was founded.

30 years later in 1897, Cheyenne Frontier Days was born.

 

From the days of an Army cavalry to modern–day Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, the military has been part of every Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration with the F. E. Warren Air Force Base open house called Fort D.A. Russell Days. With historic home tours, military reenactments and tours of Minuteman III and Peacekeeper missile systems history is on display.

Early days on the frontier required strong and innovative skills, like blacksmithing, the high-tech of its time

 

This family friendly event has Living History Camps on the Parade Field, Mountain Man Rendezvous (1840’s), Traders Row, Military Camp (1870’s) and WWII, Cavalry Rodeo/Military Demonstration, ICBM Missile Museum, missile.

 

You can only get on base once a year and this is that time, Fort D.A. Russell Days at F.E. Warren Air Force Base is located at exit 11 on I-25 in Cheyenne starting at 9:00 am Sunday, July 24 at 9:00, the last of the three day event.
