Training camp is underway and, this year, four former University of Wyoming standouts are trying to make an NFL roster for the first time.

Among them, linebacker Mark Nzeocha, who was selected in the 7th round by the Dallas Cowboys, has the best shot to make the cut. Nzeocha will get his first chance to impress the coaching staff this Thursday (8/13) when the Cowboys kick off their preseason schedule against San Diego.

His former teammate, Connor Rains, is hoping he'll have the chance to block for Peyton Manning. The offensive tackle was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent this spring.

Although the odds of making the 54 man roster are long for undrafted rookies, two other Pokes players are also hoping to make an impact as free agents. Defensive tackle Patrick Mertens broke camp with the Baltimore Ravens last week. Wide receiver Dominick Rufran will be competing for a spot with the Atlanta Falcons.

Last season, six Wyoming alums played in the NFL. Receiver Malcolm Floyd had 52 catches for the San Diego Chargers in his 11th pro season. Safety Tashaun Gipson had six interceptions in 12 games for the Cleveland Browns. Receiver Robert Herron will compete for a starting spot after an up and down rookie season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Entering his fifth year with the Philadelphia Eagles, safety Chris Prosinski is hoping to rebound from an injury that limited him to one game last season. Marqueston Huff is expected to start at safety for the Tennessee Titans. Defensive end Mitch Unrein joined the San Diego Chargers in the off season, signing as a free agent after spending five years with the Denver Broncos.
