FOX Goes Egyptian For Straight-to-Series ‘Hieroglyph,’ Because Why Not, Right?

FOX Hieroglyph Series Travis Beacham Egypt
Universal

Well, this is an odd play for the FOX federation. When last we heard the network taking a straight-to-series order, FOX had understandably opted to invest in the still-bankable Batman-less ‘Gotham,’ but its latest order might need a bit more decoding. The broadcast network has issued a full order for Travis Beacham’s ancient Egyptian action-adventured drama ‘Hieroglyph,’ but why the full investment?

Set in honest-to-goodness ancient Egypt and mixing equal parts fantasy and reality, Beacham’s ‘Hieroglyph’ follows a notorious thief who plucked from prison to serve the Pharoah, as he navigates palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and divine sorcerers.

“We wanted to do a show about deceit, sex, intrigue in the court and fantastical goings-on – no better place to set that than ancient Egypt,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment for FOX. “Travis Beacham has an inventive mind, and he has wrapped this all together in this intoxicating new drama.”

The 13-episode action-adventure drama will be executive-produced by Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope (‘New Girl‘), with Beacham (‘Pacific Rim‘), who also wrote the pilot script. Miguel Sapochnik (‘Fringe‘) will both act as an executive producer and direct the premiere episode, with production scheduled to begin in early 2014.

So, you know, sure? That sounds like something FOX can…make…TV…with. Tell us what you think of FOX’s full-series order for ‘Hieroglyph’ in the comments!
