Have you always wanted to play guitar?

On what would have been Les Paul's 96th birthday, Google allows you to play a guitar doodle at their search site.

Les Paul, a leader in developing the solid-body electric guitar, was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin on June 9, 1915. He died of complications from pneumonia in 2009.

As a tribute to the late guitar pioneer, Google's guitar doodle will be available for 24 hours to play and record songs.

The guitar doodle was designed by engineers Kristopher Hom and Joey Hurst and doogle team leader Ryan Germick.

Some doodle players have gotten quite good as you can hear for yourself in the YouTube video below.

Les Paul had several hits with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950's including "How High The Moon," Vaya Con Dios" and "Tiger Rag."

In the early 50's, Paul build the first 8-track tape recorder which helped pioneer multitrack recording and overdubbing. His other inventions include the floating bridge pickup, the electrodynamic pickup, the dual-pickup guitar, the 14-fret guitar and various types of electronic transducers used both in guitars and recording studios.

Electric guitars and electronic recording would not be the same today without Les Paul so let's all strum "Happy Birthday" together on Google's guitar doodle.
