Wyoming Governor Matt Mead has proclaimed September 4-7 (Labor Day Weekend) as "Fill The Boot'' weekend in honor of fundraising efforts by firefighters across Wyoming for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

This year will mark the 61st year that firefighters have gone out in public venues with empty boots and asked people for cash donations to help the MDA.

Heather Miller, Northern Colorado-Wyoming Area Director for the MDA, says money raised in Wyoming goes to help Wyoming victims of the disease. She says it pays for things like summer camps for muscular dystrophy victims, equipment and repairs to equipment used by victims and research on the disease.

The Governor on Tuesday kicked off the campaign by being the first in Wyoming in 2015 to put money in one of the boots used in the fundraising effort.

Miller says Cheyenne firefighters have set a fundraising goal of $30,000 for the Labor Day 2015 weekend, adding firefighters in communities across the state and nation likewise have goals based on the local population and other factors.
