We've heard it all of our lives. There are two things that are certain in life - death and taxes. To cheer you up, here's some taxes we don't pay that people used to pay years ago.Taxes have been apart of us all our adult lives. Taxes in America were first imposed in July of 1861 to help fund the Civil War. Although it was to be repealed after the war, it never was. So here we are in 2015, once again, paying our taxes.

The word "tax" comes from a Latin word taxo, meaning "I estimate." However, our government has gone way beyond estimating your taxes and has gone to pin pointing areas that could penalize you for being prosperous.

As a matter of fact, the U.S. tax code in 1913 was only 400 pages, but in 2013 it was on or about 70,000 pages. What's wrong with this picture? Probably nothing.

If you like windows in your home and you lived in England in the year 1691, you would be taxed on every window in your home. Because people were suffering health problems and ventilation was an issue, the law was repealed (160 years later) in the year 1851.

The tax business does provide jobs throughout the country. Over 1 million accountants are hired each year to help people with their tax preparation. If you live in Texas, cowboy boots are exempt from taxes, however hiking boots are not.

So today, as you file your taxes, you can be thankful that you are not being taxed on cooking oil, televisions, or salt, as people have been in times past. Happy Tax Day!
